Bust of Venus

Request
A bust of the goddess Venus of which only the section from the shoulders to the waist remains. Although this is only a fragment of a larger sculpture of undeniable quality, we observe that the shoulders and body are carved in a twisting pose giving an illusion of movement to the piece. The zone where the neck would have emerged shows a concave hollowing with a cylindrical incision in the middle, and this indicates that the head was carved as a separate piece and later joined to the body. The possibility can be considered that the head to be placed on the shoulders could have been interchanged with other heads, as happened with bust of emperors and private persons.

Venus is the Roman goddess par excellence, based on the Greek Aphrodite. She is related to love, fertility and beauty. Such was her importance that there is a classification of sculptural typologies of this goddess based on movement and attributes. The Venus de Milo is one of the most famous sculptures of this goddess due to her exquisite beauty.
