Goddess Maat

Solid bronze statuette of the Egyptian deity, Maat, here seated with legs bent up in front of her body. She is wearing a tunic from which her head alone emerges uncovered. She is wearing a tripartite wig held in place by a ribbon. She is positioned on a square base from which projects a peg which would have fitted into a larger base. This would have been of bronze or wood and on this base there would have been a set of other figures, such as gods, priests or pharaohs engaged in religious ceremonies.

Maat as a principle represents the abstract concepts of universal justice, truth, equilibrium, and cosmic harmony which ruled in the world from its inception and which had to be maintained. Her cult was not particularly strong but she often appeared as an offering to external gods.

The technique of lost wax casting is a sculptural procedure using a mould made from a prototype of the piece to be worked, and this prototype is usually made from beeswax. This is covered with a thick layer of soft material, usually clay, which then solidifies. Once this has hardened it is put in a kiln where the wax inside melts and leaks out from expressly made holes in the clay. In its place molten metal is injected and this takes on the exact form of the mould. To remove the final piece the mould must be removed.
